MailForward not working for lack of A record?

Not sure if this is similar / related to these threads, but not quite the same (could be a problem here, at the least protonmail or something is being overzealous in filtering):

Had mailforwarding setup via ZoneEdit for the best part of 2 decades.
First to my gmail, then when I finally realised how evil google was, last 4 years to protonmail.
I've got 2 domains, both identical in setup here.
CNAME, MX, and NS records only.
Never had a website, never had an A record, never had a problem with mailforwards.
Mails incoming to both stopped on Tuesday (didn't notice at first).
Sent an email outbound from my protonmail, CCed in my me@mydomain as I usually do.
First email address in CC box is red, hover over and it says "this email provider does not exist, please check address carefully before sending".
Click Send.

Then a popup:

Confirm recipient address?

We have detected some warnings. The following email address may not receive emails:
  • This email provider does not exist. Please check the address carefully before sending <me@mydomain.com>
Do you want to send the email anyway?
Click send anyway.
Wait a few minutes.

for name=mydomain.com type=A: Host not found
(further down)
Action: failed
Status: 5.4.4
Diagnostic-Code: X-Postfix; Host or domain name not found. Name service error
for name=mydomain.com type=A: Host not found
"

Tried some tests to me@myotherdomain.info, same thing.
Came here, eventually deleted the CNAME records and on BOTH domains replaced them with parked A records, so now read:
PARK * PARK 2 Hours
PARK www PARK 2 Hours
PARK mail PARK 2 Hours

Now emails are getting through to me@myotherdomain.info.
But still not to me@mydomain.com.
Possibly because the PARK feature isn't working properly?
Browser to www.myotherdomain.info goes to the ZoneEdit Parked page fine.
Browser to www.mydomain.com says no host.
nslookup www.myotherdomain.info resolves to 64.68.200.54.
nslookup www.mydomain.com says NXDOMAIN.
Set mydomain.com TTL to 5 minutes. Left it 12 hours overnight and still nothing.
Set mydomain.com A record manually to 64.68.200.54.
Still not resolving.

So I'm not sure now what the actual problem is.
Is it protonmail receiving that's throwing out domains without an A record and take it up with them?
Or is it their (and everyone else's sending) that's throwing it out first?
If I can just get around that by creating an A, why isn't that working yet?
Why is the PARK feature not working on mydomain.com?
Is DNS just not updating 12 hours later? (1 Hour tops I would have thought?)
Anything else I could try?
