Wildcard subdomain CNAMEs -- is this possible?

I'm trying to direct *.subdomain.mydomain.tld to a single destination, but adding *.subdomain to my CNAME section results in ONLY the literal '*.subdomain' being routed to the desired destination -- app1.subdomain, somethingelse.subdomain, etc.subdomain continue to not be found.

Is it possible to add a wildcard subdomain to CNAMEs?
